Construction Market Building Momentum

Building Momentum
The construction sector remains one of the most resilient markets in North America, and that strength continues to be reflected in Steffes construction auctions. Throughout 2025 and 2026, Steffes has conducted a large number of highly successful heavy construction and transportation equipment auctions, attracting bidders from across the United States and Canada. Our March 2026 Construction Auction generated more than 91,000 website sessions and over 170,000 page views, while drawing interest from major construction markets including Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, and North Dakota.

The demand behind these auction results is being driven by a strong backlog of infrastructure projects on both sides of the border. In the United States, transportation construction spending is forecast to reach record levels in 2026, with total transportation construction activity expected to surpass $209 billion. Federal infrastructure programs continue to provide significant funding for highways, bridges, transit systems, and freight corridors, while state Departments of Transportation have increased their capital budgets for fiscal year 2026.

For heavy construction contractors, that means continued demand for earthmoving equipment, paving fleets, crushing spreads, aggregate processing equipment, and support machinery. Highway expansion projects, bridge replacements, and major corridor improvements are creating long-term workloads that extend well into 2027 and beyond.

Canada is experiencing many of the same trends. Provincial investments in transportation infrastructure, municipal growth projects, resource development, and utility upgrades continue to support healthy demand for construction equipment. Western Canada, in particular, remains active with road construction, energy-related infrastructure, mining support, and municipal growth projects. As a result, buyers throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Ontario continue to aggressively compete for quality late-model equipment at auction.

Looking ahead, one of the biggest drivers of future construction activity will be the rapid expansion of data centers. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure investments are fueling unprecedented data center development throughout North America. Industry analysts report record levels of new facilities under construction, with demand frequently outpacing available capacity. Developers are actively seeking locations with access to power, transportation infrastructure, and skilled labor.

The ripple effect for the construction industry is substantial. These projects require massive site preparation, utility installation, concrete work, paving, excavation, and transportation infrastructure improvements. In many markets, contractors are already increasing equipment fleets to support this growing workload. Industry forecasts suggest that data center construction will remain a significant contributor to heavy construction demand for years to come.

As construction activity continues to expand across North America, the need for trusted equipment valuation, marketing, and liquidity partners has never been greater. For more than 65 years, Steffes has played a critical role in helping contractors, municipalities, transportation companies, and financial institutions maximize the value of their assets. Through industry-leading marketing, deep market expertise, and a proven ability to attract bidders from across the globe, Steffes continues to set benchmark pricing on heavy construction equipment throughout both the United States and Canada. Whether supporting fleet realignments, retirement transitions, mergers, or large-scale infrastructure contractors upgrading equipment to meet growing demand, Steffes remains at the center of the construction equipment marketplace. As billions of dollars in infrastructure spending, highway improvements, resource development, and data center construction continue to reshape North America, Steffes is uniquely positioned to connect buyers and sellers and help move the industry forward.
